After fixing the initial buglets, I decided "dumbot" was way too smart,
so I set about dumbing it down. Guess what? It can't be done. Almost.
As long as the bot recognises a win (or a loss) and looks one ply
ahead, it is damn hard to beat.

My prediction: No human will ever beat "bestbot"

better make that demi-gods. Thierry, the inventor of Gobblet, defeated
smartbot easily, and defeated bestbot on his third try - but he says
they're very good, just not perfect.

I beat bestbot today. The game was GB-BestBot-khan-2006-07-13-1745. I used an always-capture strategy, similar to thierry's method in the game he won against bestbot (GB-thierry-BestBot-2006-05-27-2124).

You can see both games at <http://boardspace.net/gobblet/gobblet-viewer.shtml>.

Smartbot could be beaten easily once you grasp the main principles of the tactics. Bestbot could be beaten also - actually I think it was programmed to randomly make dubious moves time to time, at least in initial stage.

Yep. All the robots make less than optimum moves in the opening stages, so they don't always play the same game.
