I've been playing a few games of Gounki lately. It seems to sit in the line-up all lonely and unloved.

What a great little quick-play abstract it is... a very pleasant surprise indeed... i recommend giving it a try..

I did just as you suggested and I agree. It has an interesting move dynamic similar to Plateau, and a victory condition a bit like Arimaa (both of which I like), but it is easy to learn and a much shorter game than Arimaa.
